Dash Snow, a promising young New York artist, died Monday night at Lafayette House, a hotel in Lower Manhattan. He was 27 and lived in Manhattan. His death was confirmed by his grandmother, the art collector and philanthropist Christophe de Menil, who said that Mr. Snow had died of a drug overdose.
Mr. Snow gained prominence after being featured in an article titled “Warhol’s Children” that appeared in New York magazine in 2007. He worked in video and photography and also developed a distinctive collage style that fused and contrasted found images in fresh and suggestive ways. He exhibited in galleries and museums in New York, Los Angeles and Europe and is currently featured in “Abstract America: New Painting and Sculpture” at the Saatchi Gallery in London.
Ms. de Menil said that he had been in rehabilitation in March and had been off drugs until very recently.

Graffiti artist identifed as river victim
Wednesday, July 8th, 2009
The body pulled from the Red River earlier this week has been identified as Darryle Caribou, a 26-year-old graffiti artist from the inner city of Winnipeg.
Police believe Caribou was trying to save a friend who had jumped into the river on July 3 in the area of the Queen Elizabeth Way Bridge. When Caribou went into the water, the strong current swept him under.
“He was an artist … truly an artist. He really inspired people — he inspired me,” said Patrick Ross, a friend and a fellow artist. “Darryle’s always had a powerful voice. He’s always spoken from his heart and he’s going to be greatly missed.”
Both Ross and Caribou worked out of the Graffiti Art Gallery, an inner city arts program. Ross said Caribou was not one to overlook beauty and managed to find it and create from it wherever he happened to be.Three of Caribou’s last known paintings are on concrete sections of the bridge, close to where he was swept away.
Ross said Caribou was trying to make something of his life through his artwork but had a hard time with it because he lived on and off the street.
Ross wants to take pictures of his friend’s last work to make sure there is a lasting memory.
According to police, the 30-year-old man who jumped into the river — prompting Caribou to go in after him — initially struggled with the current but managed to find his way to a concrete platform and pull himself out.
Members of the Winnipeg police river patrol unit and the fire department water rescue unit searched the river on Friday for Caribou but were unsuccessful in locating him.
His body was pulled out of the water Monday afternoon by emergency crews near the Provencher Bridge, downstream from the Queen Elizabeth Way Bridge.

Iz the Wiz ‘king’ of NYC subway graffiti
Monday, July 6th, 2009
SPRING HILL — For two decades, his name was tattooed on hundreds of New York City’s subway trains in loopy, colorful strokes. ”Iz the Wiz” announced himself in huge bubble letters that sometimes took up the entire side of a subway car.
His real name was Michael Martin, but Iz the Wiz was how he signed all his works.
His career as the city’s most influential graffiti artist began when, as a teenager in the 1970s, he began tagging walls for fun.
By the end of his run, his work was featured in art galleries. One colleague compared him to Andy Warhol, while others point to a famous multicolored painting of President Barack Obama as a modern example of what he started.
His life and career ended June 17 in Spring Hill, where he had been living for almost a year. All those paint fumes over the years had taken a toll on his heart and kidneys. He had been on dialysis.
Martin was 50 years old.
His deft use of spray paint landed him in jail and made him ”the longest-reigning all-city king in NYC history,” according to the graffiti website, at149st.com.[Read More]

Suspected graffiti writer dies in fall from Palmetto freeway sign
Sunday, February 22nd, 2009A West Kendall man who may have been spraying graffiti on a roadway sign tumbled to his death on the Palmetto Expressway.
Thursday night: Enrique Vincente Olivera dines with friends and heads to his Kendall home.
Hours later, the 28-year-old’s body is found sprawled in the southbound lanes of the Palmetto Expressway. In his possession: a can of silver spray paint. Above him: a green-and-white roadway sign marred with graffiti.
Officials think Olivera was killed after falling about 24 feet to the roadway, but they don’t know if he is connected to a group of local graffiti artists.
”There appears to be fresh silver writing on the sign above where his body came to rest,” said Lt. Pat Santangelo. The Florida Highway Patrol is trying to cobble together the last minutes of Olivera’s life.
I-95 SIGNS VANDALIZED
Olivera’s death came a week after ”tags” were painted on I-95 signage in Miami. On one sign, the tag Buk 50 was sprayed in red, white and black. Another sign had the moniker ”EDGE” splashed across it.
The shock of Olivera’s death spilled over to the Internet, where graffiti artists mourned his passing. The website MSGcartel.com — which calls itself an ”online exhibition” of graffiti art — offered condolences for “MERK.”
The site has a list of those in the ”cartel,” identified by pictures of their tags.
It’s unclear if he was part of the group or had contributed samples of his graffiti work. Images of the tag ”MERK” were posted under the words: “To our fallen Brother, Comrade, Friend . . . Rest in Peace homie, you will be missed but never forgotten.”
Friends and family members were well aware of Olivera’s love for art, but said they weren’t aware of a penchant for graffiti. ”He was an artist; that was his passion,” said Leo Machado, 25, who has known Olivera since they were young boys. “He loved to do that, that was his thing.”
Machado said neither he nor the family were aware that Olivera intended to climb onto a traffic sign catwalk early in the morning. “I don’t know why he did it.”
Police say Olivera fell off the catwalk over the Palmetto Expressway near Bird Road around 12:30 a.m. and was spotted by a motorist.
Alejandro Gonzalez de Mendoza was stunned to find a dead body on the highway. He was driving south on the busy thoroughfare when he saw what he thought was debris in the right lane. He tried to avoid it, but couldn’t.
”He stopped and realized it was a body, so he backed his truck up to protect the body,” Santangelo said.
The vandalized sign had visible black writing — the tag ”KOZMIC” and ”oooDe.” It was unclear if Olivera had painted on either of the two large expressway signs.
FAMILY `IN SHOCK’
On Friday afternoon, friends and family gathered outside Olivera’s West Kendall home at the Esprit community, a series of well-manicured mustard and white townhomes.
”We’re still getting over the shock,” said aunt Kathy Olivera, from outside the doorway. She would say no more under the advice, she says, of an attorney.
”Come back in a few days. We’re still getting over the shock,” she repeated.
”He was a blood brother,” said another pal who asked not to be identified.
The late Olivera worked for Sea Level, a Miami-based company, helping to do restoration work on cruise ships.
A woman who answered the phone at Olivera’s workplace Friday said, ”You are not the first one calling today and I have no comment,” before hanging up.
Records show Olivera has been arrested three times in Florida. None of the arrests were related to graffiti.
In 2002, Fort Lauderdale police arrested Olivera on a petty theft charge. He pleaded no contest and had adjudication withheld, records show.
In February of last year, he was arrested on charges of knowingly driving with a suspended license. He was arrested on the same charge again in December. He had several traffic infractions in Miami-Dade, records show.
His family released a statement condemning graffiti and reiterated that Olivera was a good man, always there when anyone needed him.
“We do not condone this type of behavior and can only hope this tragedy will keep others from doing the same. This isolated incident was out of Enrique’s normal character. . . Unfortunately, he made a mistake which ultimately cost him his life.”

Beef between 2 Los Angels tagging crews leads to death.
Sunday, July 20th, 2008Mid-City Los Angeles homicide
Adrian Garcia-Diaz, 16, a Latino youth, was shot near Olympic and Plymouth boulevards in Mid-City about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 15.
Police said students from Los Angeles High School and neighborhood youths went to nearby Windsor Park to watch a planned fight between several tagging crews.
Witnesses told police that some spectators were filming the fight. During the fight a 16-year-old Latino tagger pulled out a handgun and fired one shot into the crowd, hitting Garcia-Diaz, authorities said. Garcia-Diaz was taken by ambulance to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Several witnesses helped detectives find and arrest the suspect.
He was booked on suspicion of murder. Police did not release his name because of his age. Homicide detectives from LAPD’s Wilshire Division are seeking the public’s help in obtaining any video of the fight and shooting.

A 50-year-old South Auckland man has been ordered to stand trial for murdering a teenager caught tagging his property
Monday, June 16th, 2008
Bruce Emery, who is charged with killing 15-year-old Pihema Cameron in January, appeared in Manukau District Court on Monday for a depositions hearing.
Earlier, a friend of Pihema told the court about a night of alcohol and drug taking and graffiti.
The teenager, who has name suppression, told the court how he and Pihema spent the afternoon drinking and smoking cannabis before setting out on a Manurewa street with spray cans.
He says his friend tagged a number of fences, phone boxes and windows before a man, whose face he did not see, yelled out and started chasing them.
The accused followed them into a quiet cul-de-sac and stabbed Pihema in the chest. He died at the scene.
The friend said they both tried to spray the accused in the face with their spray cans in a bid to defend themselves.
